EP Roundup: Sevyn Streeter, Bobby V, and Bridget Kelly
Are you experiencing Beyoncé overload? What she pulled off is no less than amazing, but she isn’t the whole music industry. And if we only focus on what she has to offer, we’ll all miss out on some other great music. Here are the other recent releases you should add to your iTunes account.
Sevyn Streeter has been trying to make a place for herself in the music industry for years, first as a part of Chris Stokes’ girl group TG4 and then as part of Rich Harrison’s girl group Rich Girl. But apparently a solo career was really what she needed.
Her debut EP Call Me Crazy But … comes off as highly developed for an artist’s first release. It’s clear she has a style and direction as an artist, and she is confident in it. The EP comes supported heavily by the Chris Brown assisted “It Won’t Stop” with its mellow, laid-back feel.
Oddly enough, the rest of the EP is pretty high energy. Other highlights include “Come On Over” and “Sex on the Ceiling,” each alluding to the sexual image she’s putting together. Think of her as Kelly Rowland … as if her most recent album Talk a Good Game was her debut.
Sevyn’s voice takes a trip to shrill-land a few more times than I would like, and honestly, the heavy production can be a bit much to take in over 7 tracks. But the success of this EP hangs on Streeter’s unique vocal choices and innovative sound. All together, this auspicious beginning speaks to the star status she can reach if she keeps making the right moves.
Bobby Valentino done growed up y’all. From his days in Mista to his solo work (that sometimes verged on raunchy), his work has been all over the map. But, finally, it seems that he has grown tired of chasing trends for fame.
His new sound is something I’d coin “jazz-edged R&B” with its classic R&B rhythms and stylings fused with complex horns and keyboard riffs. Think more Jill, less Trey. More Lalah, less C Breezy. Whereas he used to be tailor-made for the club, he now fits squarely at an upscale lounge.
The collection is pretty cohesive, but tracks “Back to Love”, and “Who Am I to Change” stand out above the rest. In their own way, each song achieves Bobby V’s goal of creating “moments” in his music. He takes the time to let the music shine on its own, not making everything about himself. And each captures a feeling while boasting impressive musicality and maturity.
This EP is the surprise of the year. You’d never have thought that the “Slow Down” singer could sing such mature music, and sound so genuine to boot. Let’s just hope that this new Bobby V is here to stay.
This Roc Nation signee is steadily making a name for herself. And with the release of Cut To … Bridget Kelly, she makes a strong case for her stardom.
Her vocal timbre is absent in the game right now. She can hit those growl-y low notes, she has a strong husky mid-range, and her upper range is ethereal. Mix in her sound which is a unique, urban, and smart and you’ve got a winner.
The best thing about this collection is that each song hits a different note musically and on the emotional spectrum. She shows her range and her sexy side on “Goosebumps.” And on “S#1T Happens,” Kelly shows strength and simplicity. “Friends” shows her emotive capabilities and gives her a steady beat to ride.
Truthfully, the whole EP is a great listen from front to back, but “The Mouth” is the biggest stunner of them all. She lays her voice bare, succumbing to a love that she tried to avoid. There is immense emotional depth, intelligent lyrical writing, and incredible vocal acrobatics. You’ll have it on repeat all day.
