“Colorless” American Raven-Symoné Can Have All the Seats in America After Defending Anti-Michelle Obama Comments
It’s time for y’all to go ahead and start planning that sending off ceremony for Raven-Symoné. Y’all tried to defend her when she said she was a “colorless American.” But, now? Now she has officially stepped in it. And, by “it”, I mean a pile of pro-racist manure.
While guest hosting on ABC’s “The View” on Monday, Symoné tried her hand (again) at making intelligible cultural commentary. This time she took on the comments made by Univision’s Rodner Figueroa last week when he joked that First Lady Michelle Obama looked like an ape from Planet of the Apes. The comedian later apologized but was swiftly fired from his day job. And, rightfully so.
What was interesting about the commentary on “The View” though was how quickly Symoné leapt to cape for Figueroa rather than having the First Lady’s back.
Rosie Perez took a major issue with Figueroa’s comments. She made clear that “He did say that Michelle Obama looks like a cast member of the The Planet of the Apes.”
In response, Symoné said “But was he saying it racist-like? Because he said he voted for her later. And I don’t think he was saying it racist,”
“Oh!” Perez yelled. “I’m not a racist, but I have black friends.”
Later in the conversation, Perez wanted to reiterate that this type of “joke” is connected to a larger issue of anti-Blackness and racism she perceives within the Latin@ community.
She said “I am the Latin person here on this table and I would like to tell you that it was racist. Period. And the thing is, this is a problem in the Latin community. We do not talk about it, we do not address it and it was revealed by this man’s statement. And, you do not disrespect the First Lady of our country!”
basically asked to no longer be considered Black again gave the dumbest rationale for her asinine stance backing up Figueroa’s comments.
“Michelle don’t fire me for this,” Symoné said. “But some people look like animals. Is that rude? I look like a bird…so can I be mad at somebody that calls me ‘Toucan Sam?’”
Okay Raven. Okay.
So, we are going to act stupid and pretend that a Black woman being compared to an ape is because “some people look like animals?” Nah. We’re not.
There is no need to go into some think piece here regarding the historical marginalization Black women have faced at the hands of mainstream media. Nor is it necessary to rehash any issues here with Raven pretending as if Black women’s beauty isn’t constantly undermined and challenged as illegitimate.
But, what we can do here is offer Raven-Symoné every seat which currently exists within the bounds of America. Hell, she can have all the seats in China and those that have been manufactured there and subsequently exported around the globe. If I see a seat, it’s her’s. Period.
Raven-Symoné is a colorless American. She is also a racism apologist apparently. And, at this point, I am okay with her being expelled from the Black Diaspora permanently. She can have tea with Don Lemon and Stacey Dash.
