Beyoncé’s HBO Trailer Prepares Us For Her ‘Lemonade’
Beyoncé resides at the cutting edge. She’s always pushing the envelope, trying something new, and coming out of left field. And for better or for worse, Beyoncé has owned that domain. Nobody even comes close. But the trailer for her next big mystery project makes me wonder if she’s finally pushed it too far.
Folks have been speculating that Beyoncé has something on the way for a while now (honestly, when are people not speculating that Beyoncé is about to surprise release something), and after “Formation” took over the world, it was only a matter of time before Queen Bey made her next move. It appears this move has taken the form of a special HBO event, known only as Lemonade, scheduled for Sunday April 26 at 9PM EST. And other than teaser social media posts, the only thing concrete we’ve been blessed with has been the official trailer.
In all honesty, I don’t know what the hell that was. It appeared completely incohesive to me, with each of its parts not seeming to hold any meaning and the sum of the parts amounting to “does not compute.” But even in my confusion, I’m almost certain that there is something I’m just missing. There must be some artistic triumph that just went right over my head, and all will be revealed on Sunday when Beyoncé’s mystical powers turn what looks to me to be Andre and Boons into Cristal and Belvedere.
Giving credit to Bey, she has proven more than adept at putting together a stunning visual. The growth alone from “Crazy in Love” to know is staggering, and when you look at individual videos, “Who Run The World (Girls)”, “XO”, and “Formation” display an artistic quality that has all but left the music video universe. So I wouldn’t at all be surprised if these random collection of images were really snippets of an album’s worth of music videos.
Will I be tuning in to see what Lemonade is? Oh yes. I don’t know if it’s an album release, a long form movie of music videos, or a surprise live performance of epic scale. But I do know it’ll be expensive, the choreography will be out of this world, and Beyoncé will look fierce. And finding out what Lemonade is will be most of the fun of my Afro April so far.
