Watch Michelle Obama Explain What It Means To Be Black in the White House
Michelle Obama’s commencement speech at the City College of New York drove home the progress that black Americans have made in this country.
We know the Obamas as history makers. Barack Obama is the first black man to ascend to the presidency of the United States. Michelle Obama, the first black first lady, has broken barriers in her professional life and revolutionized the position of the first lady. And as they prepare to leave the White House, they haven’t slowed down in making marks in the history books.
Michelle Obama was chosen to provide the commencement speech at the City College of New York this year, and in her remarks, she treated her podium like a pulpit. Outside of a lengthy, implicit read of Donald Trump, she spoke to the historic nature of her family’s mere presence in the White House. She might have had Roots on the brain because she painted a beautiful, poignant picture of her daughters living the White House, and in a mere 30 seconds, laid out the importance of what has become their morning routine.
“It’s the story that I witness every single day. When I wake up in a house that was built by slaves and I watch my daughters, two beautiful Black young women, head off to school, waving goodbye to their father – the President of the United States. The son, of a man from Kenya who came here to America for the same reasons as many of you, to get an education and improve his prospects in life.”
Let’s revel in the closing moments of this presidency before it comes to an end.
