Blerd Movie Alert: Applause for the Return of “Stargate”

ancient-aliens-stargateThere has been a deluge of movie news lately covering everything from this summer’s blockbusters to release date changes for future blockbusters like Star Wars Episode 7 or Ant Man. But in the midst of all this, the announcement of a major movie reboot seems to have gone under the radar. Yes, Stargate is returning. And, it’s pretty epic.

MGM quietly announced that they would be rebooting Stargate, the universe spanning action drama from 1994¬†starring Kurt Russell and James Spader. The movie told the story of an American expedition team that travels through a recently discovered “stargate”, an ancient device that creates a wormhole to another world. There were parasitic Egyptian pharaohs, flying pyramids, and a slave rebellion. If you haven’t seen it, Netflix it, Redbox it, or use whatever movie rental service you have to see it.

Though a massive box office success, Stargate is perhaps best known for the TV series it spawned that appeared on Showtime and subsequently SyFy. The universe has been kept alive through this means for years with it’s most recent iteration, Stargate Universe¬†, coming to a close in 2011.

Most importantly, the original producers are back on board for the movie which is being billed as a trilogy. The original movie was brilliant and laid the groundwork for an abundance of storytelling (as seen in the TV series), but it was always odd that no sequels were made considering how profitable the movie was. And it’s about time the movie studio realized the goldmine they were sitting on.

Leaps and bounds have been made in movie making technology since the film was first made, and I can only imagine how visually stunning the forthcoming trilogy will be. Will they stay close to the original source material? Will they utilize the expanded universe from the television shows? Either way, it’s about time that sophisticated sci-fi hit the silver screen again.

Yep, I can’t wait to see this. This is now on my radar. But I can’t help but wonder where or how the the movie will connect to the stargate universe as narrated by the different tv series.

I thought about that too. My guess is that they will act as if those don’t exist at all and consider this a 100% reboot. I wouldn’t be surprised if they took elements from those series and integrated them into the sequels though.

I wouldnt mind, taking elements, due to the fact that I’m way more attached to the characters from the series now. Just if they due, please do not make it corny. I would hate for them to ruin my good memories, lol.
