John Legend and Common’s ‘Glory’ Evokes MLK and Ferguson

GloryWe’re suckers for John Legend’s classically-tinged voice. And rightfully so, but what has always been so striking about him as an individual is his activism. He stays out in front of civil rights issues on Twitter. He paid to have food trucks feed protesters in New York. And he puts out songs like the Golden Globe nominated “Glory” that is featured in the forthcoming Martin Luther King Jr. biopic Selma.

There are so many winning elements to this masterpiece. For one, John Legend and a piano are a match made in Heaven. Instead of marrying Chrissy Tiegen, he could have said his vows to a baby grand. Second, Common is straight fire. He speaks to the movement and the feelings of Black Americans across the nation in a way that is clear, concise, and illuminating. And third, the chorus of the song serves as a modern turn on the gospel songs that were so iconic of the Civil Rights Movement.

“One day when the glory comes, it will be ours. It will be ours.
One day  when the war is won, we will be sure. We will be sure”

Many are asking if a second Civil Rights Era is happening right now. I’d say the fires sparking across the country and abroad are definitely symptomatic of something much bigger. Athletes are donning “I Can’t Breathe” shirts. Protesters of all colors and creeds are protesting with their arms raised saying “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot.” And the Attorney General of the United States is saying that we have failed as a nation on race and police violence.

Now, this new movement has an anthem. And, John Legend and Common deliver it impeccably.
